When you turn 16 years old, you can choose anywhere in the world, and I will take you there; that’s the premise of the Niece Project. My fourth niece, Allie, chose Belize for her first trip out of the country. Over the last eight days, Allie and I learned a lot about each other as we learned how to kill bugs in the jungle as a team, live without internet/cell/ TV, that you could never have enough sunscreen or bug spray on, and we learned pretty quickly not try to have a conversation in the mornings.

As a woman who never wanted kids, I wanted to form bonds with my 6 nieces. After all, they would be my lifelines as I age. I decided to stop getting them gifts for their birthdays or holidays or even graduation. I didn’t want to bring more meaningless stuff into their world, but instead I wanted them to see the world. I wanted to awake their wanderlust and thirst to experience new cultures and ways of doing things. So the answer was easy…I would give them the gift of travel.
I told each of them that once they turned 16 years old I would take them anywhere in the world they wanted to go. Originally my thought was that it would give them something that I never had – a passport and a chance to travel internationally. However once I announced this mission and it settled in, I realized that it was giving them more than that – it gave them the chance to make their own decision. It got them thinking about the world and considering their own desires.
We also ticked a number of things off our ‘first’ lists as we traveled through Belize with Adventure Life. Allie not only had her first trip through immigration/customs and got her first passport stamp, but she also had her first dip in salt water and tried stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, and caving for the first time. She was also introduced to the largest bugs and spiders she had seen in her life in the Belize jungle…that was a ‘first’ I could have done without!
It was also my first trip to Belize, so I was able to add another country to my growing list. This also meant I had many, many new things to capture! Here are our favorite Instagram pictures of Belize from the trip!
Great beach day today in #Placencia ! We worked on tans, did a little shopping, are fish tacos, and rode bikes around town! #nieceproject
My niece and I have settled into the jungle of #Belize for the last few days! The dense humidity is tough and we are sweating profusely, but at least we have beautiful rivers to float in and caves to explore and swim in! Totally refreshing! #NieceProject @AdventureLifeTravel @Allie_Ott
Last beach day in #Belize as #NieceProject 4.0 comes to an end. Soaking up that last bit if ocean breeze and salt water!
Putting the sun in Sunday. Up early to catch the sunrise at Chabil Mar in #Placencia while my niece sleeps! #NieceProject
Rural #Belize is full of lush green landscapes and lots of little farms. However this is my favorite so far – cows that graze under the house! Peopla actually live here! #NieceProject
I will miss these #Belize smiles! These kids watched our van get towed out of the sand – I think it was their main entertainment for the day! #NieceProject
Me snorkeling!
#NieceProject hit the beach today in #Belize ! Allie’s first time in salt water!
Night dining in Belize!

What is Week In-Stagram Review?
Each week brings some new scenery and location for me – that’s just the way I like it. If you want to follow where I am real time – I will post some of my Instagram photos from the current week. Some weeks I may be traveling somewhere exotic, and some weeks it may be less interesting – but it will give you a peek into my life of perpetual motion.
