Travel Tips
Let’s start with some essentials
Always have some U.S. dollars
Stash away some crisp new bills – preferably $1s and $20s. Use them for emergencies.
Sign up for a food tour
The first day in a new destination do a food tour. You’ll get to know the local dishes or street food, get restaurant recommendations, and meet other travelers.
Have one song that you know the words to from your home country
When you are sitting around a fire or inside a local person’s home,
and someone asks you to sing a song from your country – you know one!
This will inevitably happen
Religiously apply insect repellent
Malaria pills may protect you from malaria, but they won’t protect you from dengue fever and other mosquito illnesses.
Keep digital copies of all important documents
Take pictures of your passport, license, visa, and credit cards. Store them somewhere you can easily access them – in the cloud, or send to a family member.
Leave your passport in your room
There’s more of a chance that you will get pickpocketed or simply lose your passport out & about then the liklihood of someone stealing it from your room. Play the odds, leave it tucked away in your room.
Choose aisle seats on long flights
Get up anytime you want without bothering people. Walking around every 2 hours reduces the chance of getting blood clots from flying… like I did.
Organize the first 1/3 of your trip
Leave the rest open-ended so you can plan as you go based on the people and advice you get along the way!
If you do 3 or more trips a year, get annual travel insurance
Buy it once and then you don’t have to worry about it for a year. You’ll be protected anytime you are on a trip 100 miles from your home! I recommend Allianz Travel Insurance annual plans.
Always choose ‘charge in local currency’
This usually results in a better exchange rate and avoids additional fees associated with dynamic currency conversion
