Sherry, the desert where I live is lush with vegetation. I can't imagine a village without any type of tree or bush. This certainly qualifies for one of the nowhere places you wrote about in your latest post.

To Barbara - have you gone camping in the dessert in the U.S? I happpen to once in Eastern Washington state, which reminded me of Mongolia. The beauty of the dessert only can be understood to those who love it. The vast open spaces in Eastern WA where I found nobody except insects and crying hiyennas, and campgrounds with no shower and toilets gave me a feeling of true privacy for some reason. A privacy I can't have living in downtown apartment with 400 people.

Same goes for nomads - when you are out in the open, only you and your family, you have a privacy. A complete privacy away from everyone. You live in a village, you need a privacy from my your neighbours. For many Mongolians a village life is very different than nomadic life. Mostly called somon - the subdivision of provinces, these villages where most nomads seek medical care, send kids to boarding schools and shop for necessities.

I have just as tall of a fence around my house. I don't want anyone peeking inside while they wait for their busride. And yet I go camping in dessert to get away from it all. Must be my nomadic genes calling out.

Feels like total and utter desolation. Seemingly so far from anything. Can't imagine why anyone would live here, but I guess it is all they know.

Excellent Post. I wonder why they feel the need to have fences around everything? I laughed when I read about the Coke. What is it about hot dry countries that make us love Coca Cola. It is the only thing that got us through Africa. I lived for my Coke Stops! And I know exactly how you feel about showering after being in the desert for days on end. It doesn't matter what the situation, if there is water you feel like you are in heaven.
Good for you for always trying to find the beauty in everything.

Wow! The empty space will definitely overwhelmed me. Kind of remind me of Star Wars movie. :) It's nice that you can find beauty in the places you visit.
