First off you can't just walk into the embassy, you need to make an appointment. Then they keep your passport which is a problem as my visa is electronically attached to mine- as a result I had to request a temporary one as well - which when I went to pick it up wasn't for the right amount of time. The whole process was a mess, I still haven't gotten my new 10 year passport, and its been 3 weeks since I orignially went to the embassy. Consider yourself lucky - and for anyone travelling through Australia take this as a lesson to renew somewhere else in Asia if you have the option!
