Gobi Desert – Mongolia
I chose this photo this week in order to bring more visibility to the current state of emergency in Mongolia. There are a lot of weather disasters happening around the globe right now, and Mongolia is no exception. The extreme cold weather has been the cause of death to 1.7 million heads of livestock. Herding in Mongolia is the main way of life. In a country where life is already difficult, this blow is crippling. Livestock is the main source of food and business for most of the 2.6 million Mongolians.
Some herders have lost more 50% of their livestock. This saddens me greatly because I stayed with herder families in the Gobi Desert, learning their way of life was a highlight to me. My interaction with these families made my trip to Mongolia a moving experience for me.
Hopefully as the summer months arrive, the Gobi will be a scene like this photo once again. Teeming with life and color, and never-ending landscape.

Great photo. You should put up a photo every day.
I might consider doing that…once I can get my workflow improved a bit. Thought starting with once a week would be a good trial run! Any advice you want to offer?!
If you decide to go that route, I highly recommend that you do them in batches and then schedule them to post in the future. It’s what I do with my own daily photo blog, Out of Context: http://www.driftingfocus.com/photoblog/
We have just started to do our Photo of the Day and it is incredibly challenging. If it was the only thing we did, it wouldn’t be bad.
I highly recommend batch-scheduling them in advance, so that you don’t have to think about it for weeks at a time. If something comes up and you want a particular photo on a particular day, you can move the posts around to accomodate.
Great idea to batch schedule – thanks. I’m just starting to get the hang of the weekly one, but maybe I’ll take on daily by mid year. One of the things that takes me too long is deciding what to post and then putting watermark, etc on it. Yes, I know this should all be easy – but still trying to learn my editing software; too many new things to learn at once!
The sky is gorgeous in this photo. Thanks for sharing this bit of info… I hadn’t read anything concerning Mongolia’s weather until now.
Great photo, the sky is just amazing… I’ll be back for more!
Thanks for sharing such a beautiful picture and good info on what the herders of Mongolia are facing — hopefully with summer things will turn around.
Yes – I sure hope the summer comes soon for them. They already have so little – this doesn’t help!
just gorgeous, sherry. you’re one talented photog! i love the colors, and the lines.
Beautiful photo!
Beautiful photo from a fascinating country!
What a striking photo! I’m sorry to hear about the weather disasters in Mongolia. The weather seems to be so crazy this winter…
You’re right about the extreme weather – I’m hearing about a lot of weather induced problems and disasters recently, including floods in a part of Andhra Padesh where I have charity connections and it’s normally dry and arid
Awesome pic. I spent a winter in Ulaanbaatar. Coldest winter of my life. Not something I’ll try again.
My lord – I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone! What took you there for a winter?!
I recently watching the BBC Planet Earth show on deserts and they covered the rare camels in the Gobi Desert in the winter – looked harsh beyond belief.
The world’s weather seems to be nasty at present – cold in Mongolia, heavy winters in Europe, damaging rain around Machu Picchu in Peru and more. Mongolia’s environment must be harsh enough without this.
Great picture! I love it. Mongolia is a beautiful place and we can’t wait to get back, even if it is freezing there right now. We’ll be there this summer for the Mongol Rally. Can’t wait!!!
i love photo blogs, there is a saying that a picture speaks a thousand words and this saying is also true for blogs that mostly displays photos.
What gorgeous blue skies! Great photo, Sherry!
