Hi Yvonne! I only traveled north in the Philippines, and didn't go to the beaches - however the North is much less traveled and one would think would be more difficult. I can safely say that not once did I feel unsafe during my trip North. I traveled solo and always felt safe on the bus and certainly in Banaue and trekking. I had a guide with me so that probably helped. The only time I felt a bit on edge was probably at the bus station in Manilla as we had to catch it at 11PM at night...but there's enough people around and you simply have to watch your belongings carefully. I know that Marcial will be able to help you out! Please feel free to send me any questions you may have too!

Hey I know it's been awhile but I bumped into your site at lonelyplanet.com. Was just wondering if traveling in Philippines tough and dangerous?? I see alot of transportation that has to do with bus rides from wikitravel. I've just e-mailed Marcial btw.

[...] I had hired Nora, my female trekking guide to join me for 4 days and 3 nights while in the Banaue region. She put together the most sensible itinerary and helped me find some lodging in Banaue at the Fairview Inn Guesthouse. It was a modest little guesthouse outside of the town proper with a lovely terrace and view of the town/mountains and rice terraces. I was able to negotiate a double room for the price of single room ($10US) since I seemed to be the only person there! The hotel had all of the necessities; hot water, electricity, a café, and it was run by a lovely couple, Benedict and Raquel, who spoke great English, and were a joy to talk to. What I liked the most about the room was the view and the fact that it was quiet. The only noise I could hear was the roosters which seemed acceptable after living in Asia now for 6 months. Jeepney [...]
