Week In-stagram Review Chicago Bloghouse

C&NW building

Old Chicago & North Western Railroad office building along the Chicago River

I stared at the big concrete building along the Chicago River as the sun went down illuminating it in a golden hue.  “This building changed my life 19 years ago,” was the only thought that kept running through my head.  This set me on an unbelievable path of change and adventure at the age of 25 years old.  Nineteen years ago I was inside the pictured building in the stark halls pushing paper around trying to do all the necessary accounting jibberish for the Union Pacific / Chicago & North Western Railroad merger.  A merger that landed me a buyout package from my Accounting career and sparked my much more lucrative IT career, which then propelled me to move out of the Midwest.  That was the start of motion and change in my life.  From Omaha to Minneapolis to San Francisco to  New York City to the World.

I watched as the yellow water taxi’s pulled up to the old C&NW building letting tourists off.  I let out a little chuckle thinking about how I never could have imagined that 19 years ago I would be back in Chicago working not as an Accountant and not even as an IT professional – but as a professional blogger and travel writer.  Life takes some crazy turns doesn’t it?

This week’s Instagram review took me to Chicago for #Bloghouse – a 4 day blogging workshop that myself and 5 other travel bloggers hosted for 15 new aspiring bloggers.  I spent the weekend teaching other eager adults how they could turn their small blog into a functioning business and brand that takes them around the world. The members of Navigate Media Group hosted talks about monetization, pitching, travel photography, social media, design, freelancing and more.  We also were able to get out and enjoy Chicago so that the new bloggers could put their skills to work in the windy city!

It’s been a busy week of work and seeing old friends and making new ones.  We rented out the entire Villa d Citta Bed and Breakfast in Lincoln Park via Flipkey where we also held our classes, and were supplied in plenty of homemade cookies and locally brewed Goose Island Beer.  We spent our free time out on the town to viewing various landmarks like the Chicago River, Willis Tower, Vertigo Lounge, and finished with an incredible party hosted by GoGo Inflight Internet.  We bid each other goodbye and I hopped on a Megabus from Chicago to Minneapolis to pick up my niece for our Peru trip!

As you are reading this I’m on a plane with my niece Megan kicking off our 3 week Niece Project Trip.  Next week I’ll be bringing you the Instagram update from Machu Picchu!

We stayed at the Villa D’Citta last year and were amazed at how fabulous it was. Our suite was literally as large as our first house. Hope you all got to enjoy the hot tub!

  3. At first glance that cookie looks like something else. Just sayin….

  4. I’m a Chicagoan and would have loved to participate!! Can’t wait to be home in a month.
