Video of the Week – Commuting in Vietnam

7 Comments 28 May 2009

You may want to pop a Dramamine before watching this video of my commute to work. I teach at a manufacturing plant outside of HCMC and have to commute an hour each way to get there. Luckily they provide the transportation else I would have been one of those people on the motorbikes that you see in the video among the huge trucks and potholes. The road is a mess, and getting worse during rainy season. Actually there isn’t really much of a road, it’s mainly crumbling and falling apart. It’s heavily traveled by big trucks, private company cars (like mine), and the locals on motorbikes with a death-wish.

Enjoy the bumpy ride, it’s taken from the back seat and the best I could do!

Ah – the charms of Vietnam. Some of the city roads aren’t much better! Manuvering around potholes and huge trucks on a motorbike really blows!

Um! That was really crazy…at one point…i thought that huge truck was going to run right into you. They really need to get some infrastructure put into place and fix those roads.

Whoa, the road in your video looks like the road that I am used to go through everyday. And it’s badness makes it different and special from other roads, right? :) . However, overcoming this road as physical exercises everyday helps us stronger and healthier, right? =))

Wow, great video. This reminds me when I was working for Target Sourcing Services and we went to visit a factory where I can’t even remember the location but I think this was the exact road we went on. I had totally forgotten about this experience until I watched this video because of how crazy the ride was.

I couldn’t believe how big the pot holes were, how much water was surrounding us, and how many Vietnamese people pretended like neither the potholes nor the ponds of water were around. I actually think my drive was worse though because your video looks like there are a a few huge holes, we were driving in tons of medium to small sized holes which makes the ride… let’s say more interesting.
